Franklin County

Bexley, OH

Established east-side streets where new work has to respect the old.

Bexley has a strong architectural identity and the mature landscape to match — substantial older homes, deep canopy, and a lot of original brick and stone. Landscaping here works best when it defers to what is already there, which makes material selection and craftsmanship more important than bold design gestures.

The Area

The House Sets the Brief

On a property with genuine architectural character, the landscape either supports the house or competes with it. That means material, colour, and proportion decisions carry more weight in Bexley than they would on a new build, where almost anything contemporary will sit comfortably. Add mature canopy and decades-old hardscape and the result is work that rewards care over speed.

  • Materials chosen to defer to the architecture

Colour, texture, and pattern selected so hardscape reads as though it belongs to the house rather than having been dropped beside it.

  • Mature shade throughout

Deep canopy across much of the city dictates planting selection and often makes turf a losing proposition in the worst areas.

  • Built for Central Ohio clay

Glacial-till clay holds water, and water that freezes lifts whatever sits on top of it. Excavation depth, compacted base, and drainage are standard scope on every hardscape project rather than optional extras.

Local Considerations

What We Plan For on Bexley Properties

Considerations on established properties with real architectural character.

Character-Matched Materials

Paver and stone selection weighed against existing brick and masonry so the finished work looks intentional.

Shade Planting

Selection based on the light the beds genuinely receive under an established canopy.

Root Protection

Excavation planned around mature root systems, since these trees are a defining feature of the properties.

Ageing Hardscape Assessment

Honest evaluation of whether older walks and patios can be restored or genuinely need rebuilding.

Restrained Design

On houses with strong character, the landscape supports rather than competes. Restraint is usually the right instinct.

Substantial Seasonal Cleanup

Mature canopy means genuine autumn volume, so bed cleanup here is real work rather than a quick pass.

These guys are great! If i could give 10 stars, i would. They fully designed and built all brand new beds in front of our house. The process was simple and completely painless for us. We could not be happier with the results and will definitely have them back soon to do our back yard.

Local FAQ

Bexley, Answered

Questions specific to working on properties in this area. General service questions are answered on each service page.

How do you choose materials for an older home?

We start from the house — the brick or stone already on it, its colour range and texture — and work toward hardscape that sits with it. On a property with real architectural character, a paver chosen purely from a catalogue photo is the most common way to get it wrong.

Our original walkway is uneven and I do not want to lose the look. Options?

Often the existing material can be lifted, the base rebuilt properly, and the same material reset — which fixes the safety issue while keeping the character. Where material is genuinely too damaged, we look for the closest sympathetic match rather than defaulting to something contemporary.

Can anything grow under our large old trees?

Yes, though not turf in the deepest areas. Shade-tolerant planting and groundcover give a far better long-term result than repeatedly reseeding grass that will not sustain itself in that light.
