Foundation Bed Renewal
Overgrown original shrubs removed and replaced with material spaced for its mature size.
Franklin County
West-side suburban lots where builder landscaping is ready for a real upgrade.
Hilliard grew substantially through the 1990s and 2000s, which means a large share of its housing stock now sits at the age where the original landscaping has outlived its design. Evenly spaced foundation shrubs have grown into the windows, bed lines have blurred, and back doors still open onto plain lawn. That is straightforward, high-impact work.
The Area
The planting installed with a new subdivision home is chosen for cost and immediate tidiness, not for how it will look in twenty years. Shrubs go in too close to the foundation and too close to each other, and there is rarely any bed structure at all. By the time the house is two decades old that planting is usually hiding the architecture — and clearing it out is the fastest, cheapest transformation available.
Removing and replanting with correct spacing changes the front of a house more than almost any other single project.
Many homes here were sold without any patio at all. Adding one converts unused lawn into the part of the house people actually use.
Glacial-till clay holds water, and water that freezes lifts whatever sits on top of it. Excavation depth, compacted base, and drainage are standard scope on every hardscape project rather than optional extras.
Local Considerations
Common conditions across the city’s suburban housing stock.
Overgrown original shrubs removed and replaced with material spaced for its mature size.
New patios on homes that were built without any hardscape behind them at all.
Cut, shaped bed edges to give the front of the house the structure a builder landscape never provided.
Thin or failing turf addressed with proper grading and preparation rather than seed spread over compacted ground.
Level suburban lots hold water rather than shedding it, so grading is planned deliberately around new hardscape.
Spring cleanup, edging, and fresh mulch — the highest-visibility improvement per dollar on a property like this.
Emerald Crest did a wonderful job with spring clean up and mulching. They were quick to respond and come out to give a quote. Communication was excellent and they completed the work early. Everything looks fantastic.

Questions specific to working on properties in this area. General service questions are answered on each service page.
If they have reached the windows they have usually outgrown the space permanently, and hard pruning tends to leave them looking worse. Removing and replanting with material spaced for its mature size is normally the better investment and costs less than people expect.
With how you would use it. Size, position relative to the door and the sun, and whether you want a fire feature or seating wall all follow from that. We work it out on site and quote from there.
Either can work, but neither works over compacted clay. Identifying why the existing lawn failed — usually drainage, compaction, or shade — comes first, because otherwise a new lawn fails the same way.
