We reseed the lawn every year and it still thins out. Why?
Almost certainly light. Under a mature canopy there is simply not enough of it for turf to sustain itself, and no amount of seed changes that. Converting the worst areas to shade planting, groundcover, or hardscape ends the cycle instead of repeating it annually.
Will digging near our old trees hurt them?
It can, which is why it needs planning. Cutting significant roots inside the drip line causes decline that may not be visible for several seasons. We route excavation to avoid major roots, and if a design genuinely threatens a mature tree we will say so before starting.
What planting actually works in deep shade here?
More than most people expect — there is good shade-tolerant material offering real texture and season-long interest. The mistake is buying on appearance at the nursery rather than matching to the light the bed genuinely gets.
